Theft from Australian supply chains often involves internal parties like employees or contractors, occurring during transportation or loading/unloading.

Collusion between truck drivers and warehouse employees is a common scenario in large-scale thefts.

Globally, 71% of supply chain and warehouse theft occurs from trucks and 25% from facilities, targeting “hot products” like Food and Beverage, Household Goods, Pharmaceuticals, and Electronics.

Hot products are attractive due to their high resale value on the black market and reduced risk compared to narcotics.

According to the BSI and TT Club Cargo Theft Report 2023:

  • Food and Beverage: This category saw a significant rise in thefts, increasing from 16% in 2022 to 21% in 2023.
  • Electronics: High-valued goods like electronics continued to be a major target for cargo theft, sustaining their position as one of the top stolen commodities.
  • Household Goods: During the pandemic, household goods became a prime target due to the increase in people staying at home. This trend continued into 2023, with household goods remaining high on the list of cargo thieves.

These commodities reflect the broader trends in cargo theft, where basic goods and high-value items are both highly sought after by thieves. The shift towards food and beverage thefts can be seen as a response to inflation and the economic environment of the time.

In 2023, the top modalities of cargo theft included theft from a vehicle, hijacking (this accounted for 11% of the incidents), theft of entire containers/trailers, warehouse burglaries and more sophisticated schemes such as ficticious pickups and shipment misdirection).
