Social Impact
GippsSAFE Security’s overarching goal is to improve the communities in which we operate. People are the core of everything we do. For that reason, we deliberately seek to employ marginalised job seekers, and in that way help to improve the conditions for their families and, therefore, the wider community.
We are committed to recruiting its employees locally, and to filling one in four of our full-time job vacancies with candidates who face barriers to mainstream employment. Our social initiaties are finances entirely through our trade – not from external donations or grants. This ensures our strategies are viabnle and sustainable, and not dependent on public funds.
Marian – Iraqi Kurdistan
Background
Marian was in the process of completing her last year of a Bachelor of Physics at Salahaddin University-Erbil, Iraq, when she and her family were forced to flee the country. She spent 3 years in different refugee camps before arriving in Melbourne in 2019. At the time Marian and her family could not speak or understand English.
The Opportunity
Marian was successful in being admitted into a security traineeship with the Brotherhood of St. Lawrence (BSL). Through the traineeship Marian was able to complete her Certificate II in Security Operations and obtain a security licence.
GippsSAFE Security engaged with the BSL as part of our social purpose to generate targeted employment outcomes for refugees and met with Marian. It was determined that Marian would best achieve a positive and sustainable employment outcome if she was to be placed with an experienced and supportive team to increase her confidence in the workplace.
Marian commenced working on our API site in December 2021. We committed to a training program to ensure Marian was confident in her role and support with understanding industrial relations systems.
The Outcome
Marian continues to work for GippsSAFE at our API site where her customer service skills have resulted in her becoming a team and client favourite. Marian has now fully competent and capable in managing various access control systems, CCTV platforms and induction software.
Marian is eager to learn new elements of the Security Industry and has commenced working as part of our asset recovery team. Through her employment with GippsSAFE, Marian is able to support her mother and father and is saving for a house deposit.

“I really like working with the company here (at API). I love night shifts because it’s busy and I get to see both the morning and the afternoon teams. The team is really good to work with and I have learned so much. I like working in the equipment room because you get to talk to all the staff and my english has improved.”
